What a Shopify expert charges in 2026 — freelancer hourly rates from Upwork's data, US agency and offshore rates, per-project prices for fixes, theme work and full builds, and our fixed e-commerce tiers.

How Much Does a Shopify Expert Charge? US Rates and Project Prices (2026) — American Web Guild guide card

( The Short Answer )

A Shopify expert charges $15–$95 an hour on Upwork, $90–$125 for a US-based certified freelancer, and $125–$300 an hour at a US agency in 2026; offshore teams run $20–$50. Per project, small fixes are $300–$2,000, theme customisation $2,000–$10,000, and full builds or migrations $10,000 and up. Our fixed-price stores are $600, $1,394 and $3,694. The full website cost guide covers every non-store tier.

"Shopify expert" is a title anyone can use, and the rates reflect it: the same job is quoted at $20 an hour and $250 an hour by people who both call themselves experts. The difference is usually where they are, whether they work alone, and whether you are paying for a person or a team.

Here are the 2026 rates by who you hire, what common projects actually cost, and the three-year total — because the expert's invoice is the smallest number in a Shopify store's budget.

Shopify expert rates by who you hire

Shopify development rates, 2026. Upwork figures from its published cost data; agency and offshore ranges from 2026 agency guides.
WhoHourly rateWhat it buys
Upwork freelancer (median band)$15 – $29; tiers of $15, $33 and $95 for beginner, intermediate and expertA single developer, often offshore, for defined tasks
US-based certified freelancer$90 – $125One experienced person; Liquid and theme work, light app configuration
Offshore agency or team$20 – $50A team at a distance; works well with a tight written spec, badly without one
US boutique agency$125 – $200Designer, developer and project manager at a blended rate
US enterprise integrator$250 – $450Shopify Plus, ERP and warehouse integrations
American Web Guild (fixed price)n/a — $600, $1,394 or $3,694 per storeCustom store design, cart, payments, CMS walkthrough, everything transferred to you

The freelancer figures are Upwork's own: its Shopify developer cost page reports a median band of $15–$29 an hour and tiers of $15, $33 and $95 for beginner, intermediate and expert. That median understates what experienced, US-based people charge — Clean Commit's 2026 Shopify rate guide puts certified US freelancers at $90–$125 and boutique agencies at $125–$200, with enterprise integrators above that. For context, Clutch's data puts most US web agencies of any kind at $100–$149 an hour.

What common Shopify projects cost

Typical per-project prices for Shopify work, US, 2026.
ProjectTypical priceNotes
Bug fix, app install, small theme edit$300 – $2,000Usually two to ten hours; many freelancers have a minimum
Theme customisation or mid-size setup$2,000 – $10,000A paid theme adapted to your brand, products loaded, apps configured
Custom theme from scratch$5,000 – $20,000Liquid development; worth it only when the theme is the ceiling
Full build or migration$10,000 – $50,000+Data migration, redirects, integrations and testing drive the number
Ongoing retainer$500 – $2,500 a monthUsually 5–20 hours; check what counts as an hour

Most small stores need the second row and are quoted the third. A paid theme costs about $300 and does most of what a custom theme does; the Shopify website cost guide goes through when the remainder is worth $10,000.

The three-year total

The expert is a one-off. The platform, the apps and the processing are not, and over three years they are usually the larger number.

Three-year cost of a small Shopify store, 2026. Basic plan on annual billing ($348 a year); apps at $50–$300 a month; card processing excluded.
RouteBuildPlan + apps, 3 yearsThree-year total
Theme + Upwork freelancer$1,000 – $5,000$2,844 – $11,844$3,844 – $16,844
US boutique agency$5,000 – $25,000$2,844 – $11,844$7,844 – $36,844
American Web Guild tier$600 – $3,694$2,844 – $11,844$3,444 – $15,538

Plus roughly 3% of every sale in processing, whichever row you pick. The e-commerce website cost guide has the monthly line items; the point here is that choosing an expert who keeps your app count down saves more over three years than haggling on the build.

What moves a Shopify quote

  • Catalogue size and variants. Twenty products is data entry. Four hundred with sizes and colours is a project.
  • Theme: paid, customised or custom. The single biggest swing — $300, $3,000 or $15,000 for the same storefront.
  • Integrations. Accounting, shipping, a warehouse, a CRM. Each is a fixed cost with nothing to do with design.
  • Migration. Moving from WooCommerce, Wix or Squarespace adds data work and a redirect map; the Shopify migration cost guide prices it.
  • Who writes the product copy. Nobody budgets it; everybody needs it.

When to hire a Shopify expert, and when to do it yourself

Do it yourself when

  • You have under 50 products, standard shipping, and a free Shopify theme covers the layout.
  • You can give it 20–40 hours and you are comfortable in a settings panel. Shopify's onboarding is genuinely good.
  • The budget is under $1,000. Spend it on a paid theme and product photography instead.

Hire when

  • Variants, shipping zones, tax or B2B pricing are complex enough that getting them wrong costs orders.
  • You are migrating and have organic traffic to protect.
  • You need the store to look like your brand rather than like the theme demo.
  • Your time is worth more than about $50 an hour — at that rate a 40-hour DIY build costs more than our middle tier.

How we price Shopify work

Our Shopify development is three fixed tiers rather than an hourly rate: a Kickstarter store at $600 for up to 100 products, a Dynamic store at $1,394 for up to 500 with multi-currency and the brand kit, and a High-End store at $3,694 for unlimited products and custom flows. Each includes custom design, cart and payment setup, a CMS walkthrough recorded on your store and everything transferred to you at launch, and the prices are published rather than discovered on a call. What we cannot remove is the plan, the apps and the processing — nobody can — and we tell you those numbers before you decide.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Shopify expert charge per hour?
$15–$95 an hour on Upwork depending on tier, per Upwork's published data; $90–$125 for a US-based certified freelancer; $125–$200 at a US boutique agency and $250 and up for enterprise integrators. Offshore teams charge $20–$50. Many experts prefer a per-project price.
How much does it cost to have someone build a Shopify store?
$1,000–$5,000 for a freelancer to set up a paid theme with your products; $5,000–$25,000 for a US agency; $10,000–$50,000 for a full custom build or migration. Our fixed tiers are $600, $1,394 and $3,694. The Shopify plan, apps and processing are extra on every route.
Is a Shopify expert worth it for a small store?
Yes when variants, shipping, tax or a migration are involved, or when the store has to look like your brand rather than the theme demo. For under 50 products on a free theme with simple shipping, doing it yourself is reasonable if you have 20–40 hours.
What is the difference between a Shopify Partner and a Shopify Expert?
Shopify Partners is a programme anyone can join; Shopify retired its separately vetted Experts Marketplace and now lists agencies in its Partner Directory. Neither label guarantees quality. Ask for live stores they built and two clients you can call.
How much do Shopify agencies charge monthly?
Retainers typically run $500–$2,500 a month for 5–20 hours of work. Check what counts as an hour and whether the agency holds any accounts — your Shopify store, domain and apps should all be in your name.
