How Much Does a Shopify Website Cost in 2026? Plans, Apps and Design
What a Shopify website costs in 2026 — plan prices from Basic at $39 a month, card rates, what themes and apps really add, design and build costs by who does it, and the three-year total.

( The Short Answer )
A Shopify website costs $39 a month on Basic ($29 on annual billing), plus 2.9% and 30 cents per online card payment, plus apps — a median of about $52 a month. A paid theme is a one-off $140–$400; a professional build runs $1,000–$5,000 from a freelancer, $5,000–$25,000 from a US agency, or $600–$3,694 on our fixed tiers. Three years all in is roughly $3,500 to $37,000. The full website cost guide has the non-store tiers.
Shopify's price is easy to find and easy to misread. The $39 on the pricing page is the smallest of four numbers: the plan, the processing, the apps, and the design. Most stores find out about the third one in month two and the fourth one when the free theme stops looking like their brand.
This guide puts all four in one place with 2026 figures, then adds them up over three years.
Shopify plan prices in 2026
| Plan | Monthly billing | Annual billing (per month) | Online card rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $5 | — | 5% + 30¢; selling through social and links only |
| Basic | $39 | $29 | 2.9% + 30¢ |
| Grow | $105 | $79 | 2.7% + 30¢ |
| Advanced | $399 | $299 | 2.5% + 30¢ |
| Plus | From $2,300 | — | Negotiated |
Those are the figures on Shopify's pricing page, and NerdWallet's 2026 Shopify pricing review confirms the same tiers and the 25% saving for paying annually. Two details matter. If you use a third-party payment gateway instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify adds its own transaction fee on top of the gateway's (2% on Basic, falling on higher plans). And Basic is enough for almost every small store — Grow's main gains are lower card rates and more staff accounts, which pay off only at tens of thousands of dollars a month in sales.
Themes: free, paid or custom
Shopify's free themes — Dawn and its siblings — are fast and well built, and for a small catalogue they are the right default. Paid themes from the Theme Store are a one-off purchase: Shop Theme Detector's theme pricing tracker, built from the official listings, puts the average paid theme at about $287 and the median at $315 across roughly 300 paid themes, with a spread of $140 to $400.
A custom theme built in Liquid from scratch is $5,000–$20,000 and is the right call only when a paid theme is demonstrably the ceiling — an unusual product configurator, a B2B catalogue, a brand whose look no template approximates. Most stores that pay for one did not need to.
Apps: the cost that grows
Apps are where a $39 store becomes a $150 store. Koala's benchmark of 300 high-traffic stores found a median monthly app spend of about $52 across a median of eleven installed apps. Eightx's analysis of StoreLeads data from May 2026 found only 1.8% of 3.6 million active stores had detectable app spend above $100 a month, and estimated that stores under $1 million in revenue typically run three to five paid apps at $50–$300 a month in total.
- Usually needed: reviews, email marketing, a shipping or label app. $30–$100 a month.
- Often added: upsells, subscriptions, loyalty, a page builder. Each $10–$50; together they double the bill.
- Rarely needed under $1M in sales: inventory forecasting, ERP connectors, advanced analytics. $100–$500 a month.
The discipline is simple: before installing an app, check whether Shopify now does it natively. Bundles, markets and basic subscriptions have moved into the core product over the last few years, and many stores still pay for apps that duplicate them.
Design and build cost, by who does it
| Route | Build cost | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Do it yourself | $0 – $400 + 20–40 hours | Free or paid theme, your products and copy, Shopify's onboarding |
| Freelancer | $1,000 – $5,000 | Paid theme customised, products loaded, apps configured; $15–$125 an hour depending on where they are |
| US agency | $5,000 – $25,000 | Custom design on a theme or a custom theme, integrations, project management; $125–$300 an hour |
| American Web Guild fixed tier | $600 / $1,394 / $3,694 | Custom store design for up to 100, 500 or unlimited products; cart, payments, CMS walkthrough, you own it |
The Shopify expert cost guide breaks the hourly rates down further. The e-commerce website cost guide does the same table for WooCommerce and headless builds.
The three-year total
| Route | Build + theme | Plan + apps, 3 years | Three-year total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Do it yourself | $0 – $315 + your time | $2,916 – $11,844 | $2,916 – $12,159 |
| Freelancer | $1,000 – $5,315 | $2,916 – $11,844 | $3,916 – $17,159 |
| US agency | $5,000 – $25,315 | $2,916 – $11,844 | $7,916 – $37,159 |
| American Web Guild tier | $600 – $3,694 | $2,916 – $11,844 | $3,516 – $15,538 |
Add roughly 3% of revenue for processing on every row. The pattern is the same as every platform we have run these numbers on: the build is the number people negotiate, and the running cost is the number that decides whether the store is profitable.
When to hire, and when to do it yourself
Do it yourself when
- Under 50 products, two or three variants each, flat-rate or Shopify Shipping rates.
- A free theme fits your brand well enough, and you have decent product photos.
- You have 20–40 hours and the patience for a settings panel.
Hire when
- Catalogue, shipping zones, tax or B2B pricing are complex enough that mistakes cost orders.
- You are migrating with traffic to protect — redirects are not optional.
- The store must look like your brand, not the theme demo.
- Your time is worth more than about $50 an hour; a 40-hour DIY build costs more than our middle tier.
What our Shopify packages include
Our Shopify development tiers are $600 for a Kickstarter store up to 100 products, $1,394 for a Dynamic store up to 500 with multi-currency and the brand assets, and $3,694 for a High-End store with unlimited products and custom flows — custom-designed, with a CMS walkthrough recorded on your store and everything transferred to you at launch, on the pricing page rather than behind a call. We also tell you the app list and the monthly number before you decide; the plan and processing are Shopify's, and nobody can discount those.
Frequently asked questions
- How much does Shopify cost per month in 2026?
- $39 a month on Basic, $105 on Grow and $399 on Advanced when billed monthly, or $29, $79 and $299 billed annually, per Shopify's pricing page. Starter is $5 for social and link-in-bio selling; Plus starts at $2,300. Add 2.5–2.9% plus 30 cents per online card payment and apps at roughly $50–$300 a month.
- How much does it cost to have a Shopify website built?
- $1,000–$5,000 for a freelancer customising a paid theme, $5,000–$25,000 for a US agency, and $5,000–$20,000 for a custom theme alone. Our fixed tiers are $600, $1,394 and $3,694. Doing it yourself on a free theme costs only your time plus the plan.
- Are Shopify themes a one-time purchase?
- Yes. Paid Theme Store themes are a one-off licence per store, averaging about $287 with a median of $315 and a range of roughly $140–$400 in 2026, with updates included. Free themes like Dawn cost nothing and are fast and well maintained.
- How much do Shopify apps cost per month?
- A typical store spends around $50 a month across a handful of paid apps; Koala's benchmark puts the median at about $52 across eleven installed apps, most of them free. Stores under $1M in revenue usually run three to five paid apps at $50–$300 total. Check Shopify's native features before adding one.
- Is Shopify Basic enough for a small business?
- Almost always. Grow's advantages are lower card rates (2.7% against 2.9%), more staff accounts and better reporting, which pay off only at tens of thousands of dollars a month in sales. Start on Basic and upgrade when the card-rate saving exceeds the plan difference.
- What is the total cost of a Shopify store over three years?
- Roughly $3,000–$12,000 if you build it yourself, $4,000–$17,000 with a freelancer, $8,000–$37,000 with a US agency, and $3,500–$15,500 on our fixed tiers — including the Basic plan and apps but excluding card processing at about 3% of sales.
