( The Short Answer )

A Squarespace web designer costs $50–$150 an hour or $500–$10,000 per project in 2026: solo designers typically charge $500–$2,500 to customise a template, small agencies $3,000–$10,000 for a bespoke build, and our fixed-price packages run $349 to $1,299. Add the platform — $29 a month on Core since Squarespace's July 2026 price rise — and the three-year total runs about $1,400 to $11,000. The full website cost guide covers every other platform.

Squarespace is the platform people choose because the templates look good out of the box, which raises an obvious question: if the templates are the point, what exactly are you paying a designer for? The answer is the gap between a template and your business — and that gap is priced three very different ways depending on who closes it.

This guide has the 2026 rates for each, the plan prices underneath them after Squarespace's July increase, and the three-year total for every route, including doing it yourself.

What a Squarespace web designer charges in 2026

Three kinds of people build Squarespace sites for money, and they do not price the same job the same way.

Squarespace design rates in 2026, US. Hourly figures from Flexiple's rate data; project ranges from designer directory polls and marketplace listings.
WhoHourlyPer projectWhat you get
Solo designer or freelancer$50 – $100 (median about $55)$500 – $2,500A template customised to your brand, your content placed, launched in one to three weeks
Small Squarespace agency or Circle member$100 – $200$3,000 – $10,000Bespoke layout work, custom CSS, copywriting and photography direction, a project manager
American Web Guild (fixed price)n/a$349 – $1,299Custom design, copy written, first concept in 48–72 hours, live in 14 days, account in your name

The hourly figures come from Flexiple's Squarespace developer rate data, which puts the median at about $55 an hour and the top ten percent near $115. The project ranges are the ones designers themselves report: SEOSpace's directory of Squarespace designers polled its listed designers and found bespoke builds typically start at $3,000–$10,000, while marketplace freelancers on Fiverr and Upwork quote $500–$2,500 for a template customisation.

The spread is not dishonest; it is scope. A $700 job places your text and photos into a template and adjusts colours and fonts. A $6,000 job restructures the template's sections, writes the copy, sources imagery, builds a booking flow and sets up commerce. Ask which one you are being quoted for before you compare numbers.

Squarespace's plan prices after the July 2026 rise

The designer is the one-off cost. The plan is the one that keeps going, and in July 2026 Squarespace raised most of them — PetaPixel's report on the increase put the jump at up to 26% on annual plans. These are the figures on Squarespace's pricing page at the time of writing.

Squarespace plans, US, after the July 2026 price change.
PlanAnnual billing (per month)Monthly billingOnline store transaction fee
Basic$19$252%
Core$29$390%
Plus$49$650%
Advanced$99$1390%

Basic does not allow custom code or third-party integrations, and most designers will insist on Core — so for a business site the realistic platform cost is $29 a month on an annual plan, or $348 a year. The Squarespace versus custom comparison goes through what each plan does and does not let you do.

The three-year total, route by route

Three-year cost of a Squarespace business site on the Core plan ($348 a year), 2026.
RouteDesignPlan, 3 yearsThree-year total
Do it yourself$0 + 20–40 hours of your time$1,044$1,044 in cash
Solo designer$500 – $2,500$1,044$1,544 – $3,544
Small agency$3,000 – $10,000$1,044$4,044 – $11,044
American Web Guild package$349 – $1,299$1,044$1,393 – $2,343

Two things stand out. The plan costs more over three years than a budget designer does, so the decision about which plan you need matters as much as the designer quote. And the agency route is three to five times the solo route for what is, on Squarespace, a bounded job — the platform caps how custom a site can get, and a quote should reflect that ceiling.

What moves a Squarespace quote

  • Page count. Each additional page is roughly $75–$300 of a designer's time once the design system is set.
  • Copywriting. If you supply final copy, you save $150–$400 a page. If nobody writes it, you launch with placeholder-grade words on a paid design.
  • Commerce and bookings. A store or scheduling setup adds $300–$1,500 depending on catalogue size, and it pushes you to Core or above.
  • Custom code. Code injection and third-party scripts are allowed from Core up but sit outside Squarespace support, so designers charge for the risk.
  • Photography and imagery. Stock licences are cheap; a shoot is not. Template-led sites live or die on the photos.

When to hire a designer, and when to do it yourself

Do it yourself when

  • The site is a portfolio or brochure with five pages or fewer and you already have good photos.
  • You enjoy the editor and have a free weekend — 20 to 40 hours is a realistic first build.
  • Your budget is under $500. A clean template beats a rushed cheap custom job.

Hire when

  • You need copy written, a booking flow, or a store set up correctly the first time.
  • Your time is worth more than $50 an hour, which makes the DIY route the most expensive one in the table above.
  • The site has to convert, not just exist. Layout and copy decisions are where a designer earns the fee.

What we charge for Squarespace design

Our Squarespace web design packages are the same fixed prices as every other platform we build on: $349 for three pages, $689 for ten and $1,299 for fifteen, with the copy written, a first concept in 48 to 72 hours and the site live in fourteen days. You keep the Squarespace account in your own name from day one, so there is nothing to transfer and nothing to hold. Rates for the rest of the market — WordPress, Wix, Shopify and custom — are in how much a website costs; the website maintenance cost guide covers what the site costs after launch.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Squarespace designer cost per hour?
$50–$150 an hour in 2026. Flexiple's rate data puts the median around $55 and the top ten percent near $115; experienced Squarespace Circle members and small agencies charge $100–$200. Most designers prefer to quote per project because the scope on Squarespace is bounded.
How much does it cost to have someone build a Squarespace website?
$500–$2,500 for a solo designer to customise a template with your content; $3,000–$10,000 for a small agency to build a bespoke layout with copy and imagery. Our fixed-price packages run $349–$1,299. The Squarespace Core plan adds $348 a year on top of any of these.
What does Squarespace cost per month in 2026?
After the July 2026 price increase, $19 (Basic), $29 (Core), $49 (Plus) or $99 (Advanced) a month on annual billing, and $25, $39, $65 and $139 month to month. Basic charges a 2% transaction fee on sales and does not allow custom code, so a business site is realistically Core.
Is it worth paying a Squarespace designer?
Yes when the site needs copy written, commerce or booking set up correctly, or when your time is worth more than about $50 an hour — at that point a 30-hour DIY build costs more than a designer. For a five-page portfolio with good photos, doing it yourself is reasonable.
Can a Squarespace designer move my site to another platform later?
They can move your content. Squarespace exports text, images and one blog; it does not export the layout, store pages, headers, footers, style settings or custom CSS. A move to WordPress, Webflow or a custom build means rebuilding the design and redirecting every URL that changes.
Do I own my Squarespace website after a designer builds it?
You own your content and the Squarespace account if it is registered in your name — insist on that. You do not own the template or the platform, and the site stops existing when the subscription does. Our ownership guide explains what that means in practice.
