We checked the websites of 73 web design firms from GoodFirms' US directory for a published price, a timeline, an ownership promise, a free design and a guarantee. 41% publish any price.

Do Web Design Agencies Publish Their Prices? A 2026 Study of 73 US-Listed Firms — American Web Guild guide card

( The Short Answer )

We checked the websites of 73 web design firms from GoodFirms' US directory on October 18, 2026. 41% publish any price for their work, 30% say how long a build takes, 15% say the client owns the finished site and 8% offer a guarantee; none offers a free design before payment. Where a US-dollar price is published, the lowest starts at a median of $2,125.

Every guide to hiring a web designer says to compare quotes. That assumes you can see a price before you get on a call. We wanted to know how often you can, so we went through the websites of the firms a buyer is most likely to find in a directory and recorded what each one actually tells you before you make contact.

How many web design agencies publish their prices?

41% of the web design firms we checked publish any price for their work — 30 of 73. 10 publish packages, 6 a starting price, 13 a range and 1 a subscription; for the other 43, we found no price on any page we checked, so the first number you see comes after a call or a form.

What do web design agencies that publish a price charge?

The lowest published US-dollar price has a median of $2,125 across the 26 firms that give one, from $150 to $50,000. 3 more publish only in rupees, euros or Australian dollars, and 1 advertises a free site as a route to paid work.

Lowest published US-dollar price for website work, 26 firms, checked October 18, 2026.

A published floor is not a quote. Several of the higher figures are firm-wide minimums or ranges that also cover app work, and the low ones are usually a starter package with a small page count. What the number does tell you is whether a firm is in your range before you spend an hour on a call.

How many web design agencies say how long a website takes?

30% of the firms — 22 of 73 — state how long their website builds take, and where they give a range, the upper end has a median of 10 weeks. Only 13 publish both a price and a timeline.

For comparison, GoodFirms' own 2026 survey of agencies has most putting a basic site at two to four weeks and a mid-sized one at four to eight — how long a small business website takes goes through why real projects run longer.

How many web design agencies say you will own your website?

15% of the firms — 11 of 73 — say anywhere on their site that the client owns the finished website, its code or its design. That does not mean the others keep it; it means you will have to find out from the contract, which is where who owns your website says to look.

Do web design agencies offer a free design or a guarantee before you pay?

None of the 73 firms offers a free design mockup before you pay or sign, and 6 (8%) offer a money-back or satisfaction guarantee — several of them with conditions in the fine print. Free consultations and free audits are common; free design work is not.

What does this mean if you are hiring a web design company?

It means most of what you need to compare firms is not on their websites, so you have to ask for it: 28 of the 73 firms state none of the five things we looked for. Ask every firm on your shortlist, in writing, before the first call:

  • The price, as a fixed figure against a written scope rather than an estimate.
  • The launch date, and what happens if it is missed.
  • Who owns the site — the design, the code, the content, the domain and the hosting — and when.
  • What you will see before you pay, and what it costs to walk away after seeing it.
  • The refund terms, read in full, not the headline.

The full list of questions, in the order that rules most companies out, is in how to choose a web design company.

How was the study done?

We took the first 2 pages — 96 listings — of GoodFirms' "Top Web Design Companies in the USA" directory in its default order on October 18, 2026, and read each firm's own website that day.

  • Sample. Of the 96 listings, 17 sites did not load for us and 6 firms turned out not to sell website design, leaving 73. None of the 96 was marked as a sponsored placement. 51 of the 73 give a US address as their main office; the rest list offices in several countries or name one abroad.
  • Pages read. The homepage, any page linked as pricing, packages, plans or cost, the main web design service page and the FAQ — up to six pages per firm, listed for every firm in the data file.
  • What counted. A price is any dollar (or other currency) figure the firm gives for its own work that includes websites: packages, a starting price, a range, a minimum or an hourly rate. A timeline is a stated build time for its websites. Ownership is an explicit statement that the client owns the site, code or design. A free design is a mockup or concept before payment; a free consultation does not count. A guarantee is any refund or satisfaction guarantee on website work.
  • Evidence. Every "yes" in the data has the URL it was found on and a quote of 25 words or fewer. "Not found" means not on the pages we read that day.
  • Second pass. A second reviewer re-coded 14 randomly chosen firms from scratch, weighted toward those recorded with no price, and agreed on 67 of 70 codes. The misses were one firm's pricing page that nothing on its site links to, so we then checked the /pricing, /packages and /plans addresses of every firm recorded with no price, and corrected that firm's row.

What are the limits of this study?

The main limit is the sample: it is one directory's list on one day, ordered by that directory, not a random draw of every US web design firm, so the percentages describe these firms rather than the whole market.

  • A firm may publish a price somewhere we did not look, such as a PDF, a page its site never links to, or a third-party profile; we read only its own site, up to six pages plus the common pricing addresses.
  • 17 sites blocked automated reading or did not load; they are listed in the table and left out of every percentage.
  • Some firms in a US directory are based abroad, and their pricing habits may differ from US-only firms.
  • Websites change. Every row is dated, and the data file lists the pages read, so any row can be re-checked.

Which firms were checked, and what did each one publish?

All 96 listings are below, in directory order, with a link to the page each finding came from; no firm offered a free design before payment, so that column is left out. The same rows, with the quotes and the pages read, are in the CSV data file.

How can you use or cite this data?

You can use and cite it freely with a link to this page: "American Web Guild, Do Web Design Agencies Publish Their Prices? (October 18, 2026)." The CSV has every row. If your firm is listed and we missed something on your site, tell us and we will re-check it and correct the row.

Who ran this study, and what is our interest in it?

American Web Guild ran it, and we have an interest in the result. We publish all five of the things we looked for — prices, a launch date, ownership terms, a free homepage concept and a money-back guarantee — so a study showing that most firms do not is convenient for us. That is why we are not in the sample, why every finding links to its source, and why the data is downloadable. Our own terms are on the pricing page.
