( The short version )

Custom web development, defined in one paragraph.

Custom web development means a site written for your business rather than assembled from a theme: the pages, the data model and the integrations are designed around what the site has to do. American Web Guild builds this way for companies across the US from Sacramento, California. Fixed-price packages run $349 to $1,299 for hand-coded marketing sites; app-grade custom builds are quoted above the Elite tier, and most land between $1,500 and $6,000. A standard build is live in 14 days, the first homepage concept is free within 72 hours with no call, and you own the code, the domain, the hosting and the content from launch.

Who it is for

  • Service businesses whose quote, booking or intake flow does not fit a form plugin.
  • SaaS and technology companies that need a marketing site and a product UI to share one design system.
  • Marketplaces, directories and membership sites with real data behind every page.
  • Companies replacing a slow WordPress or page-builder site that has hit its ceiling.
  • Founders who want to own the code outright rather than rent a platform.

( What you get )

BUILT IN, NOT BOLTED ON

Every Custom Code build includes the following. If something you need is missing, it goes in the quote before work starts — not in an invoice after.

  1. A site shaped by the job, not the theme

Quote builders, booking flows with live availability, member areas, dashboards, multi-step intake forms. When the thing you need does not exist as a plugin, we write it, and the layout is designed around the conversion path rather than around what a template permits.

  2. Speed you can measure

A hand-written front end ships a fraction of the JavaScript a page builder does. We target Core Web Vitals in the green on real phones, and you see the Lighthouse and field numbers before and after launch, not a promise about them.

  3. Integrations that talk to your tools

CRM, payments, scheduling, inventory, email, your own back office. Custom code connects to the systems you already pay for through their APIs, instead of a brittle chain of third-party connectors that breaks when one of them changes a plan.

  4. A CMS your team can actually use

A headless CMS or a tailored admin so staff edit text, images, listings and prices without touching code. The walkthrough video is recorded on your site with your content, not a generic tutorial.

  5. Search structure built in

Semantic HTML, server rendering, clean URLs, schema markup, sitemaps and redirects handled in the code itself. Nothing is retrofitted through plugins after launch, so there is nothing to fall out of date.

  6. Security by design

Dependency audits, input validation, rate limiting, HTTPS everywhere, least-privilege access to every service. A far smaller attack surface than a plugin stack, and nothing running on your server that we did not choose and document.

  7. Code you own, documented

The repository is transferred to your GitHub or GitLab account, environment variables are documented, and deployment is reproducible from a README. Any competent developer can pick it up after us — which is the test of a real handover.

  8. Room to grow without a rebuild

Start with a marketing site and add accounts, payments or an application later on the same foundation. The architecture is chosen for where you are going in three years, not only for launch week.

( Honest fit )

When Custom Code is the right call — and when it isn’t.

Pick Custom Code when

  • The site has to do something a theme cannot: calculate, match, book, gate, sync.
  • Performance is a business number — ad spend, lead cost or search traffic depends on load time.
  • You expect to add features over two or three years and do not want to rebuild each time.
  • You want one codebase for the marketing site and the product, under one design system.

We’d point you elsewhere when

  • You need a brochure site with a contact form and a blog. The WordPress or Webflow tiers deliver that at $349 to $1,299 with far less to maintain.
  • You sell physical products and need a cart this month. Shopify handles checkout, tax and payments better than anything we would write from scratch.
  • You want to drag and drop the layout yourself after launch. Squarespace or Wix Studio gives you that; custom code gives you a CMS for content, not a page editor.

( How it works )

Fourteen days, four stages, no mystery.

  1. Day 0–1

Brief. A short form or a 20-minute call. We ask what you sell, who buys it, and what a lead is worth.

On Custom CodeWe map every screen, data object and third-party system before quoting, so the fixed price covers the whole scope rather than the first version of it.

  2. Day 2–3

Free concept. You get a custom homepage design. No payment yet. This is the decision point — approve, revise, or walk.

On Custom CodeThe homepage is designed in full with the real interaction you asked for mocked up — a quote calculator, a booking step — not a static picture of it.

  3. Day 4–10

Build. Remaining pages designed, copy written, everything coded. One shared link, updated live, so you're never waiting on an email.

On Custom CodeThe repository is yours from the first commit. A staging URL updates with every push, so you review the actual product in your browser, not screenshots.

  4. Day 11–14

Review & launch. Two rounds of revisions, testing across devices, analytics installed, then live. You get the walkthrough video the same day.

On Custom CodeAutomated tests, Lighthouse on real devices, redirects from the old site mapped one to one, DNS cut over at a quiet hour with the old site kept warm for rollback.

Day 15+ 30 days of unlimited changes, included. Then a care plan if you want one.

  • Elite

    $1299

For a larger site, or a brand that wants every page designed on its own.

    What’s included →

The Website Design tiers cover hand-coded marketing sites of three to fifteen pages. App-grade work — accounts, payments, dashboards, custom integrations — is quoted above the Elite tier as a fixed price in writing; most custom builds land between $1,500 and $6,000, and the quote comes back within 24 hours of the brief. There is no hourly billing at any point.

Not in the tier price

  • Hosting — we recommend and set it up; the account is in your name
  • Third-party API fees (payment processor, maps, email delivery), billed by each provider
  • Paid headless CMS plans above the free tier, if your content volume needs one
  • Rush delivery, +$500

( Migrations )

Moving to Custom Code — or away from it — without losing what ranks.

WordPress
We export posts, pages and media, rebuild the templates by hand and map every URL with a 301. Rankings carry across because the structure stays; the plugin stack and the multi-second load time do not.
Wix or Squarespace
Neither platform lets you take the theme with you, so the design is rebuilt — usually better, because custom code is not fighting a template. Content and images are migrated and the domain is pointed at the new site with no downtime.
A page builder (Elementor, Divi, WPBakery)
The content comes out; the shortcodes do not. We rebuild each layout as clean components, which is where most of the speed gain comes from, and retire the builder licence.
An agency that kept the code
We start from your live site and your brand, rebuild in a repository you own, and document the handover so this never happens to you again.

Under the hood. We pick the stack for what the site has to do; you are never asked to choose, and you own all of it.

  • MERN (MongoDB, Express, React, Node.js)
  • Next.js
  • React
  • Angular
  • Node.js APIs
  • Headless CMS
( Questions )

CUSTOM CODE, EXPLAINED

For a brochure site, no — a well-built WordPress or Webflow site is cheaper and does the job. Custom development is better when the site has to do something: calculate a quote, book an appointment against real availability, gate content, sync with your CRM. Templates bolt those on with plugins; custom code builds them in, which loads faster, is easier to secure and is cheaper to change in year two.

Our published website tiers are $349, $689 and $1,299 for three, ten and fifteen custom-designed pages. Anything with application logic is quoted above that as a fixed price; most of our custom builds land between $1,500 and $6,000, with larger platforms above. Every quote is in writing before work starts, and there is no hourly billing. Here is the full market range.

For a hand-coded marketing site with a CMS and one or two integrations, yes — that is roughly where our Elite tier plus a custom add-on lands. For a template site it is high; our Professional tier does ten pages for $689. For a web application with accounts and payments it is low, and a quote that cheap usually means a template in disguise. Ask what is custom and what is a plugin.

A marketing site on custom code takes the same 14 days as every build we do: brief on day one, free homepage concept by day three, build through day ten, review and launch by day fourteen. Application work runs three to six weeks depending on the number of screens and integrations, and the date is written into the quote. If we miss it, the build is free.

Whichever fits what the site has to do. A content site is usually Next.js with a headless CMS; a product with accounts and live data is often React or Angular on a Node.js API with MongoDB. You will not be asked to choose. We recommend one stack, explain why in one paragraph, and you own all of it.

You do, from the first commit. The repository sits in your GitHub or GitLab account, the hosting and domain are registered to you, and the handover includes a README that lets any developer deploy it. There is no licence fee, no retainer requirement and no source-code-on-request clause. Here is what ownership should mean.

No. You describe what the site must do for a customer; we translate that into screens and a written scope. During the build you review a live staging link in your browser and leave comments on it. After launch your team edits content in a CMS, and the walkthrough is recorded on your actual site.

Thirty days of unlimited changes are included after launch, then a care plan if you want one: monitoring, dependency updates, backups and a fixed number of change hours a month. Because the code is yours and documented, you can also take maintenance in-house or to another developer at any time. Fixed price versus hourly, explained.

Yours could be next.
